Long Time Passing

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Wednesday, January 13, 2016,
It has been quite a while since I have blogged about anything related to Homer the Dulcimer. I have been busy and I have been amiss about posting. It is a new year with a new energy and vigor. Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unexpected places. A new order for a book followed by just the right words can make all the difference. What ever it is has inspired me to start on another adventure. So just to let you all know Homer will be appearing in a new adventure later this year.

Dulcimer Reunion

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Sunday, August 25, 2013,
I am so pleased to announce the publication of the newest adventure of Homer the dulcimer - Dulcimer Reunion. This is the third book in the Homer the dulcimer series. As my interest in the mountain dulcimer has grown and wanting to learn more about the history of this instrument and where the instrument comes from this book took life. I wanted Homer to experience learning about his past and embrace his heritage. I am enjoying so much bringing Homer to life and creating stories that are entert...

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Wednesday, March 20, 2013,
I have been going in so many different directions in the past several months. Dulcimer Campfire is out and I have been promoting the book. I have been working on my music and attending several festivals. Our duet Sweet Strings has been practicing and we actually have a gig coming up where we can promote ourselves and everything Homer! I am excited that this whole esperience just keeps growing. I love the instrument. I love the music and I am happy that I can do both. When you find something t...

A Good foundation

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, September 6, 2012,
It important that for anything you do in life that you have a good foundation on which to build that life. I feel that foundation starts with a good education. Students should be well versed in the basic skills needed for life. A good grasp on grammer, spelling, math, and science. While you may not think you use this knowledge in your adult life, you find that you use it every day. Speaking correctly - grammer shows that you respect the person with whom you are speaking. You also show that yo...

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Wednesday, August 8, 2012,
Along with writing my childen's books and playing the mountain dulcimer I have written a couple of songs for the dulcimer. I have two of my songs posted on youtube and I have added them to my Sweet Strings-Music page. When you get a chance you should check out Sun Shower on My Bedroom Window and Hard Labor Creek. It is amazing what is possible when you allow your creative side to step forward. This all started with taking up the mountain dulcimer. This is a wonderful instrument that anyone ca...

Phase 1

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Friday, August 3, 2012,
Phase 1 of the book editing is complete. After putting the book together we had to check punctuation and layout and context. The new format in reviewing allows you to check your files online before getting a hard copy. this lets you to correct mistakes or make changes quicker and to print as clean as possible a proof copy of the book. All I can say at this point is how proud I am of this book. It has a good story line and I feel for the young reader will keep them entertained. I have added pi...

Well it is a new month. Time goes on. This year is fastly coming down the home stretch. In reviewing everything I discovered that my book Receipes from an Executive Chef was released on this date in 2010. My how time slips away. It has taken me two years to put together my second children's book Dulcimer Campfire. It should be released shortly. Writing can be an up and down struggle. Motivation is such the key. Songs

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Tuesday, July 31, 2012,
Homer the dulcimer is all about music. He loves to play and entertain. He goes to as many dulcimer and music events that he can. It makes him happy when the music makes people smile. I have tried to show this in my writings. In Homer's newest adventure 'Dulcimer Campfire' there are many different songs listed that everyone plays. In particular there are four songs that I chose to put in the book with the lyrics. Of course, there had to be Homer's favorite song 'Liza Jane'. I have also include...

New Book

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Wednesday, July 25, 2012,
I have been busy this past weeks working on the second Homer the Dulcimer book. This one is titled Dulcimer Campfire. The story has steadily progressed. It is such a joy to let my imagination take me away into Homer's world and let me experience life as Homer sees it. The secret to writing they say is to write about what you know. I have included so much of myself and what I do know into my books. It is fun to relieve some of those experiences through new eyes. I hope everyone enjoys reading ...

Tomorrow we are going to Lake Wales to support our friend Fletcher in the Lake Wales Relay for Life. RFL is a wonderful organization to become involved in. The support many individuals who have had cancer. Cancer is a horific disease that takes many lives prematurely. If we can help just one individual it is worth it. We will be bringing our dulcimers and hopefully provide some music to assist in this serious but festive event. I would encourage all of my readers to get involved in some organ...

Creativity

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Friday, May 11, 2012,
Did you know everyone is creative in their own way. Everyone has special talents. Sometimes they do not even know they have them. We can become so obsorbed in our daily lives that we fail to take a time out and explore other aspects of our mental capacity. Sometimes 'noise' metaphor for our daily lives gets in the way of us exploring. Maybe we are a good listener and friend, maybe we are a great volunteer, could be we are good with our hands. But you never know until you take a time out to fi...

New Tune

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, May 10, 2012,
I wrote a new tune while I was away for the weekend. After posting about the tune I received an offer to have the song put into Tabledit. It will be nice to see what the tune looks like once it is put into a proper musical format. While receiving the offer someone else wants to publish the tune in the monthly newsletter for dulcimer players. I have sent the information so I am looking forward to actually having the tune published somewhere. The tune is Hard Labor Creek and is named after the ...

Hopefully I can get it up on youtube shortly. We also had a chance to showcase some of our arts and crafts that we are now selling. We had a lot of...

Keeping up with a website is Hard Work

I set up at the front of the booth and started playing. I knew enough music that I did not have to bring out any of my tab. This was a great opportunity to let lots of people see the mountain dulcimer. I saw a lot of people looking my way when they walked by. I became ill while attending the Dulcimer Retreat at White Springs, Florida. It has taken me awhile to recuperate and I am finally starting to feel 100% better. In February we attended the Mt. Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Tuesday, December 8, 2009,
After the big day playing yesterday I kind of took today off. I did not do a whole lot where the book is concerned. Even though I did not do anything from a physical standpoint, in order to keep up with marketing I still mentally worked on where I want to go next with the book. I still have several stores I need to contact back to try to get the book plced. Then I want to start with my location in Leesburg and work out in all directions to find and approach gift shops that might be candidates...

A Cracker Christmas

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Monday, December 7, 2009,
Today I played with my friends at the Ft. Christmas Cracker Christmas. All together there was 12 of us playing. We played for over two hours. The audience was appreciative and someone even asked if we had a CD. It was good to get with other players from Central Florida. We have a tendency to play the same songs within our group but when you mix groups up you get to hear and play what others are playing. It was a good experience for everyone. We should be doing this again in March for a bluegr...

Additional Bookstores

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Sunday, December 6, 2009,
So much is happening. The book will soon be available at amazon.com and through my own e-store. Now the publishing company has signed a deal that will make the book available through the major bookstores. It will be a few weeks before all of the arrangements have been made but soon you will be able to go into the major bookstore and they can look it up in their catalog and order a copy of the book for you. Once everything is final I will add the information to my website with the additional b...

Rainy Day

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Saturday, December 5, 2009,
Rainy and cold day today. The rain started early this morning and never stopped. Then as the day wore on the temperature continued to drop. We were supposed to play this evening but due to the rain we had to cancel. We cannot complain. We needed the rain. We are going into our dry spell and we have already been placed on watering restrictions. This rain will help keep the water tables up a little longer. While we could not play for others tonight we still practiced as we have another engageme...

Practicing

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Friday, December 4, 2009,
I had a playing breakthrough today. During practice I was following the pattern of the music and I was able to anticipate whether the notes were going up or down the fretboard and if the notes were in sequence or if they skipped, i.e. doe, ray, mee, or doe, ray, faa. I could actually visualize where I needed to go as I was playing. Figuring something new our is very exciting. My playing continues to improve.

The Smell of Baking

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, December 3, 2009,
Tonight we are taking it a little easy. We are watching a Christmas special and baking cookies. The house smells so good. Tonigh we are making peanut butter cookies. Tomorrow we are going to make gingerbread cookies. We are going to make them in a dulcimer shape and plan on giving them at our next dulcimer meeting. I come to cooking naturally. My grandmother would start in September baking German Stollen and Anise cookies. We would ice the cookies and put them away in tins for Christmas. The ...

Letter of Introduction

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Wednesday, December 2, 2009,

Today I was working on more marketing strategies. How can I get my book into more stores? Well I came up with an idea to creat a letter of introduction that I can take to local stores as away to introduce my book and introduce Homer. It is a little glimpse of what Homer is all about. This is just going to be another tool in my arsenal. I know if I want it bad enough and I work hard enough I can make my book a success.

One More Day Closer

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Tuesday, December 1, 2009,
Another day down and a day closer to the official publication of Dulcimer X'ing. Tomorrow is December 1st. The holidays are almost here and my book will be available at Amazon.com. Along with the book is a merchandise line featuring Homer the dulcimer. I have so much to be thankful for as the book comes out. I hope everyone comes to enjoy the adventures of Homer the dulcimer and takes the time to read it to their little ones.

Homer has been busy

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Sunday, November 29, 2009,

Today I sat down and worked on some outlines for Homer and where I next want to take him. I might not write anything again for a couple of months or I might write something tomorrow. I like to use an outline to first define what I want Homer to do within the context of that chapter. All of the chapters together gives me a time frame to work with. In Dulcimer X'ing the time frame was one year. In my next book I have not yet decided how long the perid of time will be. I let the story evolve and...

Christmas is coming!

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Sunday, November 29, 2009,

Christmas is coming! Thanksgiving is over and next will be Christmas. We spent part of today putting up christmas decorations. The cold front has moved in which has put a chill in the air. The colder air made it feel more like christmas is coming. This helped to get you in the mood for decorating. It was fun to put up our 'treasures' that we have had boxed up since last year. These are things that we have collected for a number of years. Putting them up allowed us an opportunity to reminisce ...

Reflection

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Friday, November 27, 2009,
Thanksgiving Day is a wonderful time to reflect and be thankful for what we have. This has been a long year for me working on my book. Having reached the end and seeing the finshed book I have had time to reflect and what I have been able to accomplish and to be thankful that everyone has been so positive and supportive. While this has been hard it has been a lot of fun. I want to wish eveyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hope your holiday season provides you peace and fulfillment.

Rainy day

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, November 26, 2009,
Today was a rainy day. It started early this morning and was still raining into the evening. Tomorrow the cold front is supposed to move through and drop the temperatures for a few days. Usually when it rains we will get a large amount of rain over a short periiod of time. But today it was more of a soaking rain. This means it rained consistently for a long period of time which allowed the rain to soak into the ground and not run off. This is sort of like the tortuise and the hare. Today's ra...

Everyday I work a little on the marketing of the book. This process is going to be ongoing. Some days I make better process then others. Sometimes it will be a lot of little steps and sometimes it might be a couple of giant steps. Each day will be unique with no two being the same. I also was woking today on some additional items for sale on my website with Homer on them. This is also part of the marketing strategy. What a Time

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Monday, November 23, 2009,
What a great time I had this past weekend. I would have blogged earlier but the sitemaster was doing work on the provider site so I was not able to blog yesterday. Classes were held all three days. I was able to learn a bunch of different things concerning the dulcimer. From techniques to songs I have hopefully expanded my understanding for my instrument. There were over 300 people in attendance. I made a lot of great contacts and I was able to sell my book to four stores who will be carrying...

I am going and not even going to be thinking about my book even though I will be displaying a proof of the book and taking prelaunch orders. Today is an okay day. After being up from getting the book completed and launching the presale to having some interest in me doing a speaking engagement, I am a little bit more on the meloncholy side. Today I am struggling with more fear and trepidation. Will the book be successful, will people like it, will they recommend it to their friends? So many questions without a lot of answers. I have to learn to slow down a little and not try to do this at full throttle each and every day. I have to...

I am getting to fly soon. Everytime I fly I am amazed! When they announce that we will be flying at 41,000 feet I cannot believe that I am in this capsule so high up. I love to fly. The chaotic airport scene not so much. Everytime I go somewhere I feel like I am going on an adventure. I love to take it all in and store it in the back of my brain. You never know what I see could someday make it into a chapter of my book.

Not a good day

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, October 1, 2009,
Not every day can be a good day. You have to be able to sometimes roll with the punches. As long as you realize that you have the ability within yourself to not allow others to control how you act or what you say you stay in control. As soon as someone else's issues become your issues then you allow them to have the control. Trust yourself and your ability to deal with any situation and you will feel much better about yourself.

Take small steps

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, October 1, 2009,
If you have somthing you really want to do the simple answer would be just do it! Sometimes it is not that easy. I have been working on this project for a number of years. First the idea of the characters came to me and one day I sat down and the story just started to come. After I finished I thought wow I wrote that. Then I put the story away but in the back of my mind I always wanted to share what I wrote. I contemplated ways I could share what I wrote and during that process which was a co...

Having a good day

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Tuesday, September 29, 2009,

Today is a non-author working day. I am doing some other things to take my mind off of my book. The book is resting as I would like to think. I will get back in the grove in a couple of days to push to the finish line. In some ways it is like making a cake. After putting everything together you sometimes have to let the ingredients rest in order for the finished product to be just right. That is what I am trying to do! Wish me luck as I try to not focus on the book 24/7.

Worked on some additions

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Tuesday, September 29, 2009,
In sharing the story of Homer the dulcimer I have received much encouragement and some suggestions. I have taken all of it in and reflective in allowing others to see my work and offer ways in which I can make the book better. I have tried to incorporate those ideas where they would enhance the book. These ideas have allowed me to better define the characters and to answer some question that may arise as the reader goes on this journey with Homer. I hope all of my readers will enjoy this stor...

Reputation

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Sunday, September 27, 2009,

Our reputation is very important to us. We work very hard to develop our reputation. It is a reflection of who we are. Most of strive to develop a reputation that we can be proud of. Today I was around many of my friends while attending church. After church I went up to tell some of them about being a struggling author and passing out my bookmark with my book title and my author's website address. Afterwards I was thinking wow I am talking about myself and what I was doing. In fact I was putt...

We Be Jammin'

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Sunday, September 27, 2009,
Today was our annual Jam N Que at Ft. Christmas Park. Several years ago three strangers from Central Florida met through a dulcimer website. Having a common interest to promote the mountain dulcimer they met to devise a plan for bringing people together who have the single interest of playing the dulcimer. I was one of those three people. The other two are now my good friends Della and John. You can see John's handiwork by going to the Florida Sunshine Dulcimer society website. I have a link ...

Taking the advice to practice, practice, practice!

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Saturday, September 26, 2009,
Tomorrow is a big day of playing with my dulcimer friends. To get ready I am playing my dulcimer. I have a lot ot tunes I would like to play tomorrow. If you want to get good at something you need to be dedicated to doing what it takes. The dulcimer allows you to advance at whatever pace you want. You set your goal and work towards reaching it. This is a lot like working on this book. I had this story in me a long time ago. It has taken me to now to see that I am close to reaching my goal of ...

What is a Book without a Cover?

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Friday, September 25, 2009,
Tonight I have been working on my Book Cover. Part of this self-publishing is doing all of the design work for the cover. There are templates which makes the process a lot smoother. I found a style I liked and have spent some time formatting the sections. I hope the readers will like what I have designed.

Remember to smell the Roses

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, September 24, 2009,
Sometimes in our busy daily lives we forget to take a step back and just take in the moment. We never know when we will not get that next moment. A dear friend of mine passed away. I was lucky to have seen her last week and I can still see her laughing as we were talking. Never take anything for granted.

Write about what you know

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Tuesday, September 22, 2009,

In a previous live I did take a college writing class. The class was about writing mysteries. We had to read several mystery books and critque them. For our final project we had to write a short mystery story. We had to define our characters, develop a plot and connect the reader to the story. I did okay but it was not a 'masterpiece.' When I started writing about Homer I rmembered what I was taught about writing about what I know. So in developing the story about Homer I used my own experien...

Spent some time playing the Mountain Dulcimer

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Monday, September 21, 2009,
Yesterday we took a day trip to St. Augustine. We took our dulcimers with us and found a park where we could sit and play. We sat on a bench under a tree and had a wonderful time. We had several people come up and ask about our instruments. It is interesting to see the faces of people who have never heard or seen a dulcimer before. We are on a mission to show the dulcimer where ever we can!

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Saturday, September 19, 2009,
I have put the book down today to work on some other projects. I think it helps the process to sometimes put something down, do something else, and then go back. You get a better perspective of what you are try to accomplish. I will be out and about. Everyone enjoy today!

Here is a little secret

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Friday, September 18, 2009,
In the book Homer has a friend that he plays for all the time. This character is based on a real event. The book even includes a picture that documents what really happened. I do not want to give too much away. You will have to read the book to find out which character is based on a real life event.

An encouraging word

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Thursday, September 17, 2009,
On a dulcimer website I received an encouraging post about my new book. This has really charged me and helps me to know that I am going in the right direction with my book. It is so rewarding watching something you have created take on a life of its own!

My first post

Posted by Dennis Waldrop on Wednesday, September 16, 2009,
This is my first post on my own personal blog. As time goes by I will blog about all kinds of different things. Sometimes it may be about my book and the progress in getting it to print. It may be about the next book I am working on. It could be dulcimer related and what I am currently doing with my mountain dulcimer. You will just have to check back to see!
